Otis School Plan 2004/05

  1. What are your problem statements?
  2. Student Achievement Problem Statements

    • Students appear to have difficulty with reading comprehension. This may be related to vocabulary development (ELL students), mastery of comprehension strategies (all students), or interest in materials (boys)
    • Though the Socio Economic Disadvantaged students continue to be our primary target group, the issues cited above cut across groups.

    Teacher Practice Problem Statements

    • Teachers, using full implementation of Houghton Mifflin Reading, work hard to hold the pace of the lessons. Using Universal Access time strategically continues to be a challenge.
    • Grade levels will use their "data days" to review student grouping and activities/instruction addressed through Univerisal Access.

    • Is student performance related to gender-based interest in the reading selections presented?

    • What do we need to target ELL and "Small Skills Group" (intervention) instruction to be an effective complement to classroom instruction?

  6. Student Achievement Goals

    • Schoolwide proficiency in English Language Arts will increase to 64% by Spring 2006, as measured on the California STAR testing. Hispanic student proficiency will increase to 50% by Spring 2006, by the same measurement; Socio Economic Disadvantaged student proficiency will increase to 47% by Spring, 2006, by the same measurement.
    • Schoolwide proficiency in math will increase to 60% by Spring 2006, as measured on the California STAR testing. Hispanic student proficiency will increase to 55% by Spring 2006, by the same measurement; Socio Economic Disadvantaged student proficiency will increase to 48% by Spring, 2006, by the same measurement.

  7. What are your major strategies?
    • Full implementation of Houghton Mifflin Reading program.
    • Use of non-fiction for teaching comprehension skills.
    • Classroom implementation of differentiated instruction - ELL and GATE.
    • Full implmentation of math pacing guides for grades 3-6.
    • Use of homework/other curricular areas to extend classroom learning.

Definitions

    School Mobility Percent - Represents the percentage of students attending the school for the first time.

    Parent Education Average - The average of all responses where "1" represents "Not a high school graduate", "2" represents "High School Graduate", "3" represents "Some College", "4" represents "College Graduate" and "5" represents "Graduate School".

    School Classification Index - A mathematically computed index using other non academic API components to create indicator of similar demographics and school environment to be used for similar school rankings.
