The Alameda Unified School District in partnership with Mervyn's, started an EMentoring program with high school students. After an initial pilot in Winter 2003, approximately 50 students are participated in Spring 2004. The Winter 2005 program had approximately 35 students

Patterned after a successful program in the Minneapolis area used by the Target Corporation, high school students using a structured curriculum to interact with Mervyn's employees via a weekly EMail. Listed below is a sample of questions being answered. Each year the questions change.

Business Questions

  • What does it take to run your own business?
  • Does your job require you to work in a team setting and do you like being on a team?
  • How do you identify problems at work and do you problem solve once the problem has been identified?
  • Where do you find information to get help for new ideas?
  • How do you manage your hours and work load during the day and what tools do you use?
  • Is there something going on in another part of the world that is affecting your job and in what way?
  • Does your company have clear standards of conduct that are applicable to your daily work responsiblities?
