5.) Alameda Science & Technology Institute (ASTI) Update on Class of 2008
Background: The first class from the Alameda Science & Technology Institute (ASTI) program will be graduating in June, 2008. The Alameda Science & Technology Institute (ASTI) program was approved by the Board in 2003. The partnership program with Peralta Community Colleges with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provides Early College High School experience. Although open to all students, low-income young people, first generation college goers, English language learners, and students of color as well as students who are unsuccessful academically and need an alternative education to excel were encouraged to apply.
Staff will make a presentation of an overview of the ASTI program, the course of study and recap of college community credits earned by the graduating seniors.
Fiscal Implications: None
Superintendent Goal: Goal #1 Continue to improve student achievement while also narrowing and closing the achievement gap.
6.) Prioritization of Projected Measure H Funds
Background: At the special March 4, 2008 Board meeting, the Board approved a resolution placing a emergency parcel tax measure on the June 3, 2008 election ballot.
Staff recomends the following items be restored based on the parcel tax resolution and ballot language:
- Elementary music grades 1-3
- Reduction of high school atheltics and closure of swim centers
- 9th grade class size reduction
- Reduction of high school advanced placement sections
- Reduction of middle school counselors
- Reduction of clerical support at Encinal High School
On a 3-2 vote, the Board voted to approve the Superintendent recommendation for prioritization of restoration of the programs bulleted above.
Fiscal Implications: Restoration is dependent upon Measure H passage.
Superintendent Goal: Goal #2. Align spending plan.
7.) California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) Update
Background: For three years, AUSD has received a yearly CAHSEE Intensive Instruction Grant to provide services for students who have not passed the CAHSEE by 11th grade. A lawsuit against the State of California has established new requirements.
Staff presented the new requirements and programs that are being put into place to meet the requirements.
Fiscal Implications: Additional staff time will not impact the General Fund.
