California High School Exit Exam

2004 Results

BACKGROUND: The California High School Exit Exam is one of the key tests required by the State of California. The current 11th grade class is the first class to be required to pass the test in order to receive a high school diploma. The test consists of two portions, English Language Arts and Mathematics, which set minimum levels ofproficiency for a high school student should know and be able to do. Every student begins taking the exam in March of their 10th grade year and has 8 opportunities to retake the test or portion of the exam they do not pass.

The current 11th grade class will begin CAHSEE testing in March 2003.

English-Language Arts Results (Combined 2001-2002)

Number of students who have passed the ELA portion: 666

Number of students who still need to pass the ELA portion: 149

 

Mathematics Results (Combined 2001-2002)

Number of students who have passed the Math portion: 571

Number of students who still need to pass the Math portion: 244

 

Note: Students number for each portion will not add up.

 

In 1999 the California Legislature implemented the CAHSEE (additonal background) a requirement for a high school diploma. It us supposed to take effect in June 2004. The Legislature commissioned a study to determine if the CAHSEE was fairly implemented. This study will be used by the CA Board of Education to determine if the test should be effective in 2004. UPDATE:JULY 10, 2003 The Calfornia Board of Edcuation voted 9-0 to delay implementation of CHASEE as graudation requirement until 2006.

UPDATE:March, 2005 The Calfornia Legislature introduces bills to delay implementation of CHASEE as graudation requirement beyond 2006. In addition, a school district sues the State of California over testing of English Language Leraners on standardized testing including the California Exit Exam.

Research is emerging that a single test for issuance of diploma is not good public policy. Many states with exit exams are developing multiple measures.

ELA Pass Rate: 87%

Math Pass Rate: 84%

Students who did not pas will have four additional opportunities to take the tests needed to pass.
