The Trade Desk was co-founded in 2009 by\u00a0Jeff Green, the company\u2019s chairman and CEO, and David R. \u201cDave\u201d Pickles, its chief technology officer (CTO). The partners had met at\u00a0Microsoft,\u00a0where Pickles worked, after it acquired Green\u2019s real-time, online auction advertising company,\u00a0AdECN, in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2012, the company was included as an alpha partner in\u00a0Facebook\u2019s launch of the\u00a0real-time bidding\u00a0(RTB) advertising platform, Facebook Exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, The Trade Desk launched new\u00a0AI\u00a0tools: Koa, an AI forecast engine; Megagon user interface; and The Trade Desk Planner, for mapping strategies. That year, the company also introduced its proprietary unified ID solution, as a free universal cookie identification service.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2019, The Trade Desk launched an advertising campaign, \u201cMedia for Humankind,\u201d to position itself as a \u201cmore transparent digital advertising\u201d\u00a0alternative to Google and Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trade Desk is a \u201cdemand-side\u201d or \u201cbuy-side\u2019 ad platform which allows advertisers to buy ads in auction-like format through real-time bidding. This is an automated method for buying and selling inventory that eliminates the need to call up an agency or salespeople to place the ad. The official term for this is programmatic, and the trend is popular in ad-tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
