If Elected to Council, Ruben Tilos Will Make a Motion to Abolish Live/Work OrdinanceDon Roberts, Alameda Daily News Following are highlights of comments made by City Council Candidate Ruben Tilos on September 15th broadcast of the Don Roberts TV Show: Roberts: What is your position on Measure A, which states there shall be no multiple dwelling units built in the City of Alameda? Tilos: I have the same position as [City Council Candidate] Mrs. Bail. I am a strong protector of Measure A. I would do nothing to have it changed. Roberts: If you are elected to the City Council, will you introduce an ordinance to rescind and throw out Alameda's live/work ordinance? Tilos: Yes. I would like to eliminate that ordinance. It's a dagger to Measure A. Roberts: The owners of the massive Habor Island Apartments on Buena Vista issued hundreds of eviction notices to their tenants. What would you have done if you had been on the Council to handle that situation? Tilos: I would have started looking at the facts two years ago. The Council knew there were a lot of code violations happening . . the Police Department knew things were happening . . . Those were tell-tale signals that something was wrong. If I were a Councilmember back then I would have started investigating. This lawsuit the City has filed is a little late. Roberts: What is your position on the Boys and Girls Club's proposal to put some of the club's functions in McKinley Park? Tilos: I am very opposed to that. I live right next to Longfellow Park. if anyone tried to impose on my right to use my public park I'd be very upset. This is public land, that's a private group. Roberts: On a number of occasions, City Manager Jim Flint has received requests from Councilmembers to put items that they want on the action portion of the City Council Agenda. He didn't do that. He put the items on the non-action portion of the agenda. If you were on the City Council and the City Manager did that to you, what would your response be? Tilos: I would try to have a vote by the City Council that we put our agenda items there. I've been attending City Council meetings and attendance is very low and I can see why. All of the hot issues are put at the end of the meeting. Do you want people to attend or not? I think maybe the City Manager probably doesn't want people attending these meetings, maybe so that he will get less feedback so that he can go on with his master plan. As a Councilmember, I would like to see the meetings run more efficiently. If you know 50 people are there for an agenda item, let's put that one on the top of the list. Let's not keep them waiting until 10 or 11 o'clock.
