New Faces for Alameda

Alameda Sun Thursday, November, 2004 Ed Moser

The city of Alameda will soon have one new city council member, two new school board members (but no term limits) and protection for local revenues, among other things, after Tuesday’s election.

Voters overwhelmingly approved Prop. 1-A, which had been widely lauded as a necessity for local governments and had the support of the city council, finished with 83.7 percent of voters’ support.

Measure F, which removes the Alameda Unified School District from the city’s charter, passed by a narrow margin with 56.9 percent of the vote. Supporters of the proposition had said the charter’s language needed to be updated to recognize the school district and city as separate entities but opponents said there was not enough information about the term limits in the public eye before the election.

Incumbent Marie Gilmore won back her city council seat, garnering the highest percentage of any of the candidates at 22.8 percent.

Doug deHaan won the other open city council seat with 19.3 percent, narrowly edging out Pat Bail who received 18.4 percent of the votes. Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, who sits on the Alameda Health Care District Board, finished fourth in the race with 17 percent of the vote.

Janet Gibson won her bid for re-election to the Alameda Board of Education, gathering the most votes in the election at 19.5 percent. David Forbes and William Schaff, who were running a tandem campaign, won the remaining two school board seats up for election. Forbes was close to being the top vote-getter at 19.2 percent and Bill Schaff finished with 17 percent of the vote.

Incumbents Lena Tam and Jeptha Boone won back their seats on the Board of Directors for the City of Alameda Health Care District. Tam gathered the most votes with 39.5 percent and Boone finished with 26.8 percent of the vote.

Former Mayor Bill Withrow won the Area 1 seat for the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees with 56.7 percent of the vote.
