In December 2018, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters certified the Open Space Initiative had gathered the required number of signatures to be placed on a future ballot. The signature gathering cost $15,000 and was primarily paid for by Cardoza Properties (owner of the strip mall at Webster and Central) and Crown Harbor HOA.
In January, 2019, City Council approved putting the initiative on the ballot by calling a special election for April, 9 2019. The cost for the special election will be over $500,000. In addition, placed the City Council placed the Caring Alameda Act on the ballot.
